*Students must show work to receive credit on the math homework. Please remind your child to least attempt each problem and not leave any without work shown. We will go over areas of difficulty in class. We do the math set that corresponds to the homework in class together and they are the same types of problems with different numbers. Students should be able to refer back to this set for help setting up the problems.

Reading:

STUDENTS WILL BE ASSIGNED READING LOGS FOR HOMEWORK EACH NIGHT! Their log should include a deep thought and evidence from the text supporting that thought. On Tuesday night, the assigned reading will be in the form of a paper reader that we are sending home. Students should write their reading log entry over this book for additional discussion on Wednesday.

We have been working on our Informational Reading Unit: "Reading History", where we are learning all about the American Revolution. We have been and will continue watching "Liberty Kids" to gain background knowledge on this time period. We have also started conducting research over the Revolution and its subtopics. We will use the information we gather for our debate and our Informational Book, that we are working on in Writing. *From now until Christmas Break, we will be taking a break to test winter reading levels.* We will continue the second half of the unit after break.

*Students will receive one "free pass" per trimester on homework. If homework is not complete after the free pass, they will have to go to the homework room to finish their assignments during lunch and recess.

Writing:

W
e will be finishing up our Informational Writing unit, in which we learned to write about history. We have begun researching for, planning and drafting our Informational Books over the American Revolution and subtopics. The final Informational Book is due Friday!

Students will usually participate in a mini lesson most days in Writing before working on their independent writing skills.

*In Writing, although a large part of the grade will be their final product essays, I take several participation grades, as well. Students will be expected to take notes and participate in mini lessons and other activities as part of their grade.

Word Study:

We will be piloting a new Word Study program (not "Words Their Way" this year. We plan on following this schedule:

Day 1-Introducing the new word list
Day2- Spelling word activity or worksheet
Day 3-Vocabulary word activity or worksheet
Day 4: Review Game and Practice Test
Day 5: *TEST!* (16 spelling and 5 vocabulary words; tested separately- two grades)

THIS WEEK'S WORD LIST BELOW:

**There will be no word study this week due to various midyear testing.**

Vocabulary Words:

SCIENCE:

For the next couple of weeks, we will be taking a break to watch episodes of "Liberty Kids." This show covers many topics of the American Revolution and will prepare us with background knowledge to study this topic in our upcoming reading unit! Students will be graded by completing questions over each episode.

Social Studies is normally covered within our Reading curriculum, but we will be supplementing some additional social studies instruction during this time, as well.
